For instance, I must have Heinz ketchup…a cheap imitation won’t cut it. And when it comes to cereal, General Mills or Kellogg’s is the only kind I will buy.
Now let’s carry this into the world of writing. Are you a cheap imitation?
You are if you can’t be yourself. When you start trying to imitate another writer, you are nothing but a cheap version of that person. I don’t know how that makes you feel but I would much rather be a name brand.
Your name is your brand. You might write horror, but you aren’t Stephen King. You might write romance but Danielle Steel you will never be.
Every writer is unique. You bring something special to the written word. It can’t be, nor should it be replicated.
You should be set apart. Nobody else in the entire world has the exact same experiences as you do. No one else sees life in the exact same manner as you do.
What other writers offer is not an opportunity to emulate them. But it is our chance to learn from them.
Trust me…others will appreciate you more (and you will appreciate yourself more) if you stay true to who you are. Don’t be a cheap imitation.
