I tend to be the type of person that always has background noise. When I am working, the television is on. Not when I’m actually writing but when I’m researching, inputting my assignments into the database, etc.
My house always has noise, whether its music, the TV, my children or the dogs. Even at night I sleep with a fan on, so I can hear the sound of whirring.
Yet there is something special that we can get from silence. When we close off the world and the distractions, it gives us an opportunity to reflect, to think and to ponder.
Writers need times of silence. I can only imagine how many ideas I might have missed because the noise of this world has stood in the way…or the inspiration that wasn’t allowed to come to surface because it kept getting pushed down by noise.
I think there might be something to setting aside moments of silence. It’s something I am going to try and incorporate into my life.
What about you? Are you comfortable or uncomfortable with silence?

I love the sound of silence. It soothes my restles soul. My wife travels frequently for work and with an empty house often I have time to gather myself and my thoughts. I don’t mind it myself.
